Medicare becomes a part of your life after you turn 65. This government funded medical insurance program, which was started in 1965, covers a significant part of healthcare requirements for all senior citizens. It is essentially divided into four specific parts which are designed to meet different types of needs.
Medicare Part A and Part B
Part A and Part B are directly controlled and sold by the government and is also referred to as Original Medicare. Part C and Part D have to be bought from private insurance companies.Part A covers hospitalization costs, some home health care, hospice care and skilled nursing facility. Part B covers outpatient medical services like, doctor visits, medical equipment etc. Most people do not have to pay any premiums for Part A which is funded by the Medicare taxes paid by employed individuals. For Part B, you have to pay a monthly premium which is estimated on the basis of your salary. Financial assistance is given to qualifying people who need help to pay the Medicare premiums.
Medicare Part C and Part D
Medicare C is also called Medicare Advantage and are only sold by private insurance companies. So is Part D. Part C or Medicare Advantage covers all the benefits given under Original Medicare and also some extra ones. This is an alternative way to get Original Medicare benefits. For both of these you have to be first enrolled into Original Medicare. Part D specifically covers the costs of prescription drugs.
Medicare Supplement Plans
Apart from these, there is another type of Medicare plan called the Medicare Supplementplan or Medigap plan. These are supplementary plans for Original Medicare, Part A and Part B, and have to be used with them only. These plans mitigate the out-of-pocket costs which comes with Part A and Part B.These plans are also sold by private insurance companies only.
